THE EZHR EMPLOYER'S GUIDE TO THE FIFA WORLD CUP 2022
As the World Cup in Qatar starts in just under a week the headaches that some employers will face are more than just whether your team will qualify for the knock-out stages. Here are some things to watch out for and what you can do…
Hours and Flexibility
The kick-off times for games are 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm and 7 pm. This means that the majority of teams will have at least one game kicking off during the working day.
It is not as easy for all people to be released from their work to watch games. But where possible it may be beneficial to consider temporary changes to working patterns to allow employees to watch games. Either by finishing early to watch a game or taking a couple of hours off to watch a match and make up the lost time later.
Don’t be surprised if you see an increase in holiday requests from employees who want time off to watch matches.
Lateness and Absence
While the majority of people will balance their love of the beautiful game and their time at work, some may be overcome by the need to celebrate each and every match.
You should keep an eye on your lateness, issues can be challenged and keep an eye on employees who may have requested leave suddenly becoming unwell. Still approach these issues with an open mind.
Support Each Person’s Home Nation
If you are able to put things in place for fans of England and Wales it’s worth considering how you support those who may wish to support their home nation.
Look at whether you can extend these arrangements for everyone and accommodate their requirements.
Banter!
Nobody wants to be the fun police, but always be aware of good-natured sporting rivalry escalating over into something more serious.
In advance of that tournament make sure that employees and managers know what standards of behaviour are expected of them before, during and after the match.
