EZHR Weekly Update 17th January 2023
Hello and welcome to the EZHR weekly(ish) update.
Firstly we hope you had a restful festive period as it appears that most businesses have hit 2023 with gusto.
It does seem that everyone has suffered from the flu over the Christmas period, and the increase in viral illness has resulted in the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) advising that children with a fever not to attend schools and nurseries.
While this may seem fairly sensible employers are likely to see more parents requesting time for off for dependents.
It’s important to remember this is here for emergencies and there to help people put child care in place. Excessive requests can reasonably be addressed, but also consider what you can do to work with people too! While there have been no employment changes to talk about there has been some interesting data coming out.
The tribunal service has said that year-on-year claims for July to September are up 51% in 2022 from the same period in 2021. Additionally, many claimants face delays of over 16 months for their case to be dealt with.
This seems to be following the same trend as when the economy faces a period of turbulence and instability, there is generally a rise in claims.
They have also released compensation data relating to unfair dismissal and discrimination cases, these being:
⚖️Unfair dismissal award (Maximum) - £165,000
⚖️Unfair dismissal award (Average) - £14,000
⚖️Discrimination award (Maximum) - £228,000 for Race Discrimination
⚖️The number of Costs awards increased compared to the two previous years, at an average (mean) of £8,818.
Finally, 4 million workers appear to be consider secondary employment to battle the increasing cost of living. It is always worth checking your clauses on secondary employment and remember those on 0-hour contracts and under the lower earnings limit don’t need to disclose their secondary employment now.
Also, we’ve done a video on employees who may be content creators on OnlyFans.
