Managing a HR HEADACHE IN THE HOT WEATHER
A red weather warning has been put in place for large parts of the UK over the coming days and we may see temperatures reach as high as 35 degrees.
It is important to think ahead at these times and prepare to manage several situations. Here are a few pointers help you get through the next few days:
While there is no legal limit to temperatures in the workplace, temperatures need to be ‘reasonable’ and managed.
Try to control the air temperature, where possible. Use your air conditioning systems, if you don’t have air conditioning see if you can manage the workspace to let in any breeze or through other means such as fans if possible..
Encourage people to dress for the weather, it still needs to be appropriate but tailored shorts will work instead of a suit.
Provide teams with water if there isn’t running water isn’t where you work i.e. those who work away from a work location.
Check-in on staff whose health may be impacted i.e. those with asthma, respiratory issues, pregnant women, etc.
If you think someone may be at risk, speak to your H&S team or advisors and look to take some pre-emptive action.
Additionally, the rail and transport providers are already warning of the impact to travel so encourage your teams to think about planning their travel and allow additional travel if you need to.
Finally, expect some people to request leave for time to enjoy the weather and consider how you prioritise these requests. Keep an eye on absence too, there will be employees who have to step in support those with a genuine need and some people who may use it as an opportunity for some time off. In these circumstances please consider the person, what you know, and don’t jump to conclusions. If you think someone hasn’t been completely honest get in contact and we’ll help you navigate the process you need to follow.
